Acting

The performing art in which movement gesture, and intonation are used to realise a fictional character for the stage, for motion pictures, or for television.

Find your character

We are actors from the day we are born. As children, we have an appetite for mimicry, for demanding attention and for pretending to be someone else – some would say this never changes!

In life however, we get to choose the characters and the situations, they are familiar to us. And our ‘audience’ is limited to just a handful. We therefore at least have some idea what ‘tactics’ to use to make our ‘audience’ believe the story we are telling.

Acting/Drama

Theatre is all about storytelling and it is principally through the actor’s participation that stories truly ‘come alive’. The actor’s art is so much more than just ‘make believe’ or ‘pretending’.  Actors need to fully inhabit a persona that they might not be immediately familiar with and bring that character to life in a sincere and believable way to an unknown audience. This is the craft of acting.

Acting inhabits a range of techniques, from timing, rhythm, hearing, sensitivity to physical co-ordination. BC Theatre Arts, following The Dang syllabus, focusses on all of these and  more as students learn by ‘doing’ and by watching other actors, listening, copying, imitating and re-inventing for themselves. By exploring ‘being’ someone else, you invariably find out more about yourself, growing in self-confidence and understanding of others.
